Twelve Unlikely Heroes

"Twelve Unlikely Heroes" by John MacArthur is a really good book. When I first started reading it, I thought it would just be a lot of stuff I already knew about some specific people in the Bible. I was wrong. This book is filled with facts that I had never heard before, including speculations on what Onesimus went on to do with his life after restoration with Philemon, details about Roman slavery, more about the world Esther lived in and reasons why four years passed before the king began to look for a new queen, etc...I thoroughly enjoyed the book and loved the fact that Mr. MacArthur briefly went back through all of the heroes in his book in the epilogue. After sharing about them again, he pointed out that the ultimate Hero in these stories is our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!! He is the one who led Esther to the palace and used her to preserve the Jewish people again, HE is the one who did great miracles to deliver Miriam and all of the Israelites from the Egyptians, and on and on...These great people in God's Word were merely tools in the hands of a Mighty God. God wants us to be willing to be tools for Him as well. Am I willing? I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksneeze and I was not asked to submit a positive or negative review. This is my personal opinion.

The Wedding Dress

"The Wedding Dress" by Rachel Hauck was a really good story. I told my husband that it was one of those books you could curl up with on a rainy day and just read for hours. Girls love a good romance story and here we had at least four. We were able to go back in time, learn a little history, and also learn how a very special dress could connect these special women. At times I thought the symbolism with the dress and the Gospel was a little stretched, but a good idea nonetheless. The story would've been good without any symbolism, in fact. It was an interesting addition to the book though. I found myself really wanting to see this dress after reading so much about its beauty. The ladies that we learned about in the book were amazing. Emily was daring, courageous, and not too concerned about what people thought of her. Hillary was strong enough to survive great heartache and to learn after many years that God had used her greatly. Mary Grace was a humble and grateful woman. Last but not least, Charlotte was a woman of faith and love. I would recommend this book and I would probably give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Thank you, Booksneeze for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

"Blue Moon Promise"

"Blue Moon Promise" by Colleen Coble was a good book. I would not go so far as to say it was great, but it was enjoyable. You can definitely see Colleen's love for the "marriage of convenience" storyline. In fact, the last four books I've read of hers have had a very similar love story.

The main characters in this book were likable. Lucy sometimes was a bit whiney to me, but you learn to love her and cheer her on in her quest to find a true love. Nate was a very patient and committed man.

I thought that some parts of the story were rushed or underdeveloped. I was confused by the relationship between Nate Stanton and Paddy O'Brien. Unless I missed something, which is possible, O'Brien was furious with Stanton on one occasion, and on the next they seemed perfectly fine. Also, I thought the ending was rushed. I knew something big would happen, but when it did the book was just about over.

Overall, the story was intriguing and unique. It just wasn't my favorite of hers. I would still give it 4 stars and recommend it. Colleen Coble is my mother's favorite author and she's hooked me on her books as well.

Lonestar Angel

"Lonestar Angel" by Colleen Coble was a great read. The book was an excellent mystery that kept me guessing until the very end. I agree with some of the other reviewers in that some of the details were a bit unbelievable, but this was a book to be read for entertainment. I enjoy most books written by Colleen Coble and this was a good series. There were a lot of similarities in the three books, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just hard to keep the books straight after you've read all three. Clay and Eden were characters that you will fall in love with. Their love story is special and is a great reminder that God can do what seems impossible in your life. You will also become attached to the little girls. Their personalities were adorable and I imagine Mrs. Coble had a fun time developing them. I did see the end coming, as far as the little girls are concerned. I won't give too much away for those who haven't read the book. Thank you to booksneeze for a complimentary copy of "Lonestar Angel." I was not asked to write a positive review of this book.

"The Wonder of Your Love"

I just finished reading "The Wonder of Your Love" by Beth Wiseman. This was my first time to read one of her books. I enjoyed the book, but there were a couple of things I didn't care for. I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read the book yet, but I thought the comment about the mailman was inappropriate and a couple of times I actually felt as if the author was mocking the Amish.I could be wrong though. When I read a Christian novel, I want to know that it is clean and not at all crass. But besides those couple of comments, the story line had me glued. You will grow to love Katie Ann and Eli and wish you were there to knock some sense into them. You will be annoyed with Martha, the overbearing friend. This is a story filled with many different emotions. It's a story of love, romance, betrayal, friendship, trust, and much more. I recommend this book as a good read. I will be looking forward to reading more from Beth Wiseman in the future.

"Spring for Susannah"

"Spring for Susannah" by Catherine Richmond was overall a well-written story. I agree with most of the reviews though. I have to rate this book a 3, because it was hard to overlook the distasteful language many times. I don't understand why the author felt she needed to include so many details about the romance of her main characters. For those who enjoy reading that type of stuff (which is sad that someone would), they should go to the secular romance novels. When I pick up a Christian fiction novel, I expect there to be a difference. Sadly, I think this book will end up in the trash, because I don't feel comfortable giving it to anyone. I don't want them to think I approve of the content. The characters in this book were very likable and the story line was engaging. I was surprised that this was Catherine Richmond's debut novel. But I highly recommend, like many others have said, that she take out some of the "romance." This would probably create a lot more followers. "The Band That Played On"

I just finished reading "The Band That Played On" by Steve Turner today. Wow! What an amazing account of history! The author did some incredible research and allowed us to learn many things about the eight musicians aboard the Titanic. There is a lot of speculation about what the musicians played as the boat went down, but an overwhelming majority attests to the fact that they did play something. There were many people who scoffed at the musicians being referred to as heroes, but how many would face certain death so calmly and bravely? Turner quotes survivors as saying that the band continued to play as they were to their knees in freezing waters. The author gives us the backgrounds of these men, the backgrounds of their family members, and what happened with their families after the tragedy. The story of Wallce Hartley was astounding! When asked what he would do if he found himself on a sinking ship, he predicted that he would play his violin. He did just that. No doubt, it calmed many passengers that night. I highly recommend reading this book.

I received this complimentary copy of the book from the publisher through the booksneeze.com program and I was not asked to give a positive review.
